Kindness is not silence to keep the peace, and honesty is not talking until the other person breaks — there is a middle way.

Many of us were taught that deference is a virtue, until we cannot say what we need. Others are so "direct" they wound everyone around them. Kind communication that keeps your self intact lives in the middle — and it can be practised.
Sentence 1: what you observe (not what you interpret)
"These last two weeks we have talked less" is an observation · "You do not care about me anymore" is an interpretation. Start with a fact neither side can deny, and the other person will not raise their guard.
Sentence 2: what you feel and need (own it)
"I feel distant, and I need real conversation once a week." Say "I", not "you make me". Feelings are ours; needs are ours. Nobody can argue with an honestly expressed feeling.
Sentence 3: a clear, doable request (not a command)
"Could we put phones away and talk for an hour on Wednesday nights?" A good request has a time, a behaviour and room for the other to answer. If they decline, you have still not lost yourself — you said what you needed.
When the other person does not respond
Good communication does not guarantee the outcome you want. It guarantees you did your part with kindness and honesty. What comes after is about boundaries — the next chapter.
