A resume, LinkedIn and portfolio HR actually reads — the first 6 seconds decide everything

A resume is not a life history. It is a marketing document with exactly one reader: the person about to hire you.

Recruiters spend 6–8 seconds on a resume before deciding whether to keep reading — and before it reaches a human it must pass automated screening (ATS). This article covers what we fix most often in resume reviews.

The first line must say who you are and what problem you solve for them

Not "motivated, hard-working, eager to learn" but "Digital marketer, 6 years, grew online sales 40% across ASEAN markets". Summarise yourself in two lines with numbers and context.

Every experience bullet needs a result, not a duty

"Responsible for customer accounts" is a duty · "Managed 30 enterprise accounts with 95% renewal rate" is a result. HR hires results, not duties.

LinkedIn is your living resume

Headline: state value, not just title · About: 3–4 human paragraphs · Ask for recommendations from people who saw your real work · Post or comment in your field 2–3 times a month so you can be found.

Portfolio: show your thinking, not only pretty outcomes

For creative, tech or strategy roles, a strong portfolio tells three things per piece: what the problem was, how you decided, and how measurable the result was. Three complete stories beat fifteen images.

Try this today
  1. Open your resume for 6 seconds, close it — what do you remember? That is what HR remembers
  2. Cut every adjective without a number behind it
  3. Tailor keywords to each posting; never send one version everywhere
